There we are: welcome to Voices of a Multiple Italy! | Ci siamo: benvenuti a Voci di una Molteplice Italia!

[EN] I have always been of the opinion that Friday the 17th is a good day. Superstition suggested to me that on this day two curses cancel each other out: that of the number 17, which, according to the Neapolitan numerology I inherited from my father, represents tragedies, and that which traditionally invites Calabrians to avoid travel and undertakings on Tuesdays and Fridays, which comes instead from my mother. And since no diaspora really emancipates a Southern Italian from superstition, I thought that despite my transnational relocations, this was the ideal day to publish Voices of a Multiple Italy | Voci di una Molteplice Italia, the bilingual online digital anthology I have been working on for over three years. It is also an optimal way to start the year, if you think: January 17, 2025, one of my good intentions is already accomplished, I make public the project to which I have dedicated most of my time in the last years.

So today, on www.multipleitaly.org you have access to the first part of a work that will continue until the summer. The idea that inspired me was to create an alternative space to academic publications, dedicated to scholars but also to students, teachers, enthusiasts and the curious, where I can disseminate in an understandable and inclusive language the findings I have developed during my research dedicated to the multiple cultural representations of the different types of Italian migration and mobility. At the moment, on the site are available:

• In the Voices section, the first 12 texts of the anthology (out of the 24 planned for the final work), in their original version and in their translation, mostly by English-speaking students with whom I collaborated during the TransIT-Many Diaspora from One Transnational Italy project between 2021 and 2023; Thomas Proudfoot helped me to edit the translations of the "Voices" into English and also co-translated two of them with me;

• In the Project section, an introduction to the choices that guided my work and some texts describing the evolution of the project;

• In the Contents section, some texts describing the theoretical aspects of the project and guiding the reading of the "voices", which I authored;

• In the Resources section, a first bibliography containing the references that I have consulted in the above sections.

In the following sections, you will find a blog that continues the one originally published on www.multipleitaly.com; credits, acknowledgements and copyrights; contacts; and finally, a space containing information about me and a list of my publications, including those published in parallel with the development of this site.

I have organized the work of the next few months around a series of bimonthly deadlines on three Fridays, when I will add substantial sections to the website: March 14, May 16, and July 18. At each deadline, four texts and new fact sheets will be added to the content area, as well as resources, mainly related to education. However, the site will be reviewed and updated with small additions more or less every two weeks. My idea is to follow the schedule of the Multiple Italy(s) blog, which, after a farewell post at the end of January, will no longer be updated and will be completely replaced by this space, permanently closing the experience of the Marie-Skłodowska-Curie project TransIT-Many Diasporas from One Multiple Italy.

In addition to the texts, all the wonderful pictures hosted on the website are by Rita Ansone, a Latvian photographer based in Lisbon who has visited Italy several times and returned each time with a few new amazing shots.

There is already quite a bit of stuff on the site then. Thanks again to all the people who helped me realize an idea that started swirling around in my head six years ago, during my first year in California (I will link here the Acknowledgments page, where I have largely expanded on my thanks), and enjoy the reading! See you in two months, in the meantime any comments are welcome.

[IT] Ho sempre pensato che il venerdì 17 fosse un giorno positivo. La scaramanzia mi ha suggerito che in questo giorno due maledizioni si annullino: quella del numero 17, che secondo la numerologia napoletana che ho ereditato da mio padre rappresenta le disgrazie, e quella che tradizionalmente invita i calabresi a evitare di intraprendere viaggi e iniziative di martedì e venerdì, che invece deriva da mia madre. E siccome nessuna diaspora emancipa davvero un italiano del sud dalla scaramanzia, nonostante le mie ricollocazioni transnazionali ho pensato che questo fosse il giorno ideale per rendere pubblico Voices of a Multiple Italy | Voci di una Molteplice Italia, l'antologia digitale online bilingue a cui sto lavorando ormai da oltre tre anni. Si tratta anche di un modo ottimale di avviare l'anno: 17 gennaio 2025, tra i buoni propositi porto subito a termine quello di rendere pubblico il progetto a cui ho dedicato la maggior parte del mio tempo negli ultimi anni.

Dunque, oggi su www.multipleitaly.org avete accesso al primo segmento di un lavoro che sarà ripreso e continuato fino all'estate. L'idea che mi ha ispirato è quella di creare uno spazio alternativo alle pubblicazioni accademiche, dedicato agli studiosi ma anche agli studenti, agli insegnanti, agli appassionati e ai curiosi, dove diffondere con un linguaggio comprensibile e inclusivo i contenuti che ho raccolto durante la mia ricerca dedicata alle molteplici rappresentazioni culturali delle diverse tipologie di migrazione e mobilità italiane. Al momento, sul sito sono disponibil:

• Nella sezione Voices, i primi 12 testi dell'antologia (sui 24 previsti dal lavoro finale), nella loro versione originale e nella loro traduzione, realizzate perlopiù da studenti anglofoni con cui ho collaborato durante il progetto TransIT-Many Diasporas from One Transnational Italy tra il 2021 e il 2023; Thomas Proudfoot mi ha aiutato con l'editing delle traduzioni delle "Voci" in inglese, co-traducendone insieme a me anche due;

• Nella sezione Resources, una prima bibliografia di riferimento contenenti le fonti che ho consultato nelle sezioni di cui sopra.

Nelle sezioni successive, trovate un blog che eredita la pagina originarimente pubblicata su www.multipleitaly.com; credits, riconoscimenti e copyright; contatti; infine, uno spazio contenente informazioni su di me e una lista delle mie pubblicazioni, incluse quelle pubblicate parallelamente all'elaborazione di questo sito.

Ho organizzato il lavoro dei prossimi mesi intorno a una serie di scadenze bimestrali in cui aggiungerò sezioni consistenti al sito, si tratta di tre venerdì: 14 marzo, 16 maggio e 18 luglio. A ogni scadenza saranno aggiunti quattro testi e nuove schede informative nello spazio dei contenuti, più alcune risorse soprattutto legate alla didattica. Tuttavia il sito verrà rivisto e aggiornato con piccole aggiunte più o meno ogni due settimane. L'idea è quella di seguire la tabella di marcia del blog Multiple Italy(s), che dopo un post di congedo a fine gennaio smetterà di essere aggironato e sarà assorbito completamente da questo spazio, chiudendo definitivamente l'esperienza del progetto Marie-Skłodowska-Curie TransIT-Many Diasporas from One Multiple Italy.

Al di là dei testi, tutte le meravigliose foto ospitate sul sito sono di Rita Ansone, fotografa lettone di stanza a Lisbona che ha visitato l'Italia numerose volte, e ogni volta è tornata a casa con qualche scatto.

Sul sito dunque c'è già un bel po' di roba, dunque di nuovo grazie a tutte le persone che mi hanno aiutato a rendere concreta un'idea che ormai sei anni fa cominciava ad agitarsi nella mia testa, durante il mio primo anno californiano (rimando qui alla pagina dei ringraziamenti, dove mi sono opportunamente dilungato) e buona lettura! Ci rivediamo tra due mesi, ma intanto ogni commento è molto gradito.
