The prominence of family in the definition of Italian society has held an important role, creating a multiplicity of communites which at times are at odds with the organizazion of Italy as a nation-state: the value of the family still today often preceeds the interest of the country in the choices made by individuals, and this is also mirrored in the choice of an immigration law based on blood ties - ius sanguinis - rather than birth. The issue of family is then a fundamental one to address in the representation of the experience of Italians abroad as well as the experience of new communities and individuals immigrating to Italy or even more born in the contry and facing this cultural aspect while suspended between diverse family cultures and traditions.
